3-D Video Innovation with Red Hydrogen One 4-View Lightfield Display

Red Hydrogen One’s 4-View Lightfield Display offers a viewing experience that surpasses 3D – no glasses required.

Basis developed their Hydrogen phone software, application, entertainment network, and content delivery network, to bring the device to major carriers worldwide.

Problem / NEED

Basis partnered with Red to develop their content delivery network for their latest phone, the Hydrogen One. The network had to be both scalable and robust, as well as capable of handling state-of-the-art DRM protection. Additionally, it required the ability to stream and download their new H4V (3D video) format.

Solution

Hydrogen Application: Basis developed a tailored application for the Hydrogen One with Android OS, allowing online and offline 3D playback streaming. It worked with Leia to turn the 3D playback on or off and with the Content Delivery Network to allow safe and secure movie authorization and download. The application also enabled transactions for purchasing and owning the library of movie assets on the platform.

Hydrogen Network: Basis built a complex application that allowed creative professionals, including small movie makers and large studios, to upload and manage their assets on the Hydrogen platform. The application included payment and distribution rules, marketing materials for them to customize and edit, and tools that enabled users to upload secure assets, and transcode them to the h4v holographic format for 3D playback, if desired.

Hydrogen Content Delivery Network (CDN): Basis developed a custom solution that securely ingests unreleased movie assets directly from studios, transcodes those assets into the h4v format, and stores them safely in the network’s vault of movies. When users rent or purchase a movie, the system encrypts the movie assets for playback using hard-backed DRM, allowing playback for the rental duration only, or longer if they bought the movie. It also supported both online and fully offline streaming modes.

RESULTS

Application: Delivering secure 3D playback of movies, the Hydrogen app is among only a handful of applications that has received carrier certification and has been launched with carrier-delivered phones. In the first couple of months of launching, over 10,000 users have downloaded the application and played videos through the system.

Network: The Hydrogen Network generated over 1 million dollars in revenue within the first few hours of its release. This innovative platform offers a wide range of impressive features, including complex payment system, distribution, and rights management for small film makers and major studios alike. It also includes rules for marketing and movie assets, login capability, and end-user management of movie purchases, rentals, and pre-downloaded movies.
