Problem / NEED
Basis helped RED Camera streamline remote workflows during the production of David Fincher’s movie Gone Girl.
The Gone Girl production used RED Cameras to film the movie. As Gone Girl was filmed at a remote location, producing film dailies, which allows directors to review and edit the movie right away, took a longer time. The Gone Girl team needed to drive several hours to another location and slowly upload and transcode each of the recordings one by one. The lack of an efficient note-taking solution also meant that the director would not be able to apply their notes directly on the video footage. All of these factors added to inefficiencies and delays during Gone Girl’s production
Solution
RED teamed up with Basis to develop software and hardware solutions that enabled the production team’s management of Gone Girl.
These solutions included an iPad app, a custom on-site computer, and a computer application called Data Wrangler that the director could use on set. Basis’ solutions helped RED enable the Gone Girl crew with real-time data and video streaming, efficient note-taking, and immediate feedback in the editing process.
Custom On-Set Computer: This computer was crucial for reducing the time it took for the Gone Girl crew to upload, process, and stream the recordings and data in real-time. Having a dedicated computer that could handle the needs of the production crew on-site ensured that all RED camera footage was immediately available for review and that any changes could be made right away.
On-Set Computer Application: Leveraging a custom Teradek integration, the RED cameras were able to stream the footage onto the on-set computer as it was being recorded in real-time. The computer application also handled the real-time transcoding of metadata and PIX (a digital image format) during filming.
iPad App: This iPad app connected to the on-site computer, which allowed the director to directly take notes on the video footage that was being shot in real-time. Basis worked with Adobe to inject side-car metadata so that when the metadata was downloaded from PIX, the editors would be able to see the director’s notes in the timeline. These notes were automatically linked to the corresponding footage, so when an editor opened the video, they could see the director’s comments and easily identify what sections needed to be edited and how.
RESULTS
Basis’ custom software and hardware solutions for RED significantly reduced the time and costs the Gone Girl crew spent on post-production. These solutions not only streamlined communication between the director and editors but also enabled an overall smoother production process.
