Problem / NEED

Payabli, a leading payment processing company, faced significant challenges with their on-premises infrastructure. Maintaining their servers was costly and inefficient, and the company wanted to reduce operational expenses while improving their service environment.

Payabli needed a quick and seamless migration to the cloud within just a few months. Their primary objective was to transition their infrastructure to the cloud while minimizing downtime. They also sought ongoing maintenance support to ensure a robust and optimized environment for their payment processing services.

Understanding the benefits of migrating to the cloud, Payabli partnered with Basis to move their infrastructure to AWS.

Solution

Resource Discovery

The process began with a straightforward evaluation of Payabli’s existing infrastructure. Their environment consisted of .NET applications with a SQL backend, which were hosted on premises servers. Basis identified that the solution required both application hosting and a robust database to replace the current setup. The resource discovery phase was straightforward due to the simplicity of Payabli’s requirements.

Migration Pattern Identification

A “lift and shift” approach was chosen as the migration pattern for Payabli. To streamline the process, Basis containerized the .NET applications using Docker and deployed them onto AWS Elastic Beanstalk and EC2 instances. This method ensured minimal disruption to Payabli’s operations while rapidly transitioning their workloads to the cloud.

Landing Zone Design and Deployment

To support the new cloud environment, Basis designed and deployed a secure landing zone. A CI/CD pipeline was created to automate the deployment process and ensure consistent and efficient application updates within AWS.

Cutover Planning

To minimize downtime, Basis reconfigured Payabli’s DNS settings to point to the new AWS environment. Basis utilized AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) to migrate the SQL database to Amazon Aurora, allowing Payabli to continue their payment processing operations during the migration without experiencing any downtime.

Application Testing

Once the migration was complete, Payabli’s team tested the functionality of their applications, while Basis ensured all environments were operational and performed as expected.

Rollback Planning

In case of any issues, the legacy environment was kept operational during the migration. If any problems occurred, Basis planned to revert the DNS settings to point back to the original servers, ensuring business continuity.

RESULTS

The migration was completed within just a couple of months without any downtime, enabling Payabli to rapidly transition to a cloud-based environment that was better optimized for their needs. As a result, Payabli significantly reduced their annual infrastructure costs by 50%.

The new cloud environment also enabled Payabli to scale on-demand, empowering the payment processing company to efficiently handle the rapid growth and demand it was seeing. These results highlight the financial and operational benefits of their AWS migration.
