Happy Ring
Cutting Costs & Optimizing DevOps on AWS
Problem / NEED
Happy Ring, a leading AI hardware company, needed help revamping their DevOps infrastructure, which was preventing them from scaling effectively.
Although Happy Ring already had AWS infrastructure set up by a different service provider, their initial setup on Amazon EKS was misconfigured and overly complex for their needs. This made it difficult for them to scale beyond 1,000 users. Additionally, they lacked a clear DevOps pipeline, leading to inefficiencies in deployment and resource utilization.
Basis helped Happy Ring deliver streamlined, scalable, and cost-effective DevOps solutions on AWS to support their rapid growth.
Solution
After a thorough assessment of Happy Ring’s architecture, the Basis team decided that Amazon EKS was contributing to their operational overhead. Instead of trying to fix an over-engineered solution, we implemented a right-sized DevOps approach by:
- Decommissioning EKS:
We spun down Happy Ring’s existing EKS clusters, which were too complex and expensive for their needs.
- Migrating to Amazon Elastic Beanstalk (ELB):
Since Happy Ring’s application didn’t require container orchestration anymore, we switched to ELB instead, as it provided a simpler, fully managed deployment. environment.
- Utilizing Amazon EC2 for ML Workloads:
We deployed dedicated EC2 instances to handle Happy Ring’s machine learning engines, ensuring optimized performance without the unnecessary complexity of Kubernetes-based ML model hosting.
- Implementing a streamlined DevOps pipeline:
With ELB handling deployments, we structured a CI/CD workflow that enabled automated updates, faster deployments, and rollback capabilities without the need for manual effort.
RESULTS
Our DevOps optimizations led to significant operational and cost benefits for Happy Ring, such as:
- Enhanced Scalability:
Happy Ring is now easily able to scale beyond 1,000 users to over 100,000 users without performance bottlenecks.
- Simplified DevOps Pipeline:
With ELB handling deployments and EC2 optimizing ML workloads, Happy Ring now has an efficient CI/CD process with automated updates.
- Lower Costs:
Migrating from EKS to ELB eliminated unnecessary overhead, resulting in a substantial cost savings of 75%.
- Optimized Machine Learning Performance:
Happy Ring’s ML workloads are now powered
By right-sizing Happy Ring’s DevOps approach and leveraging the correct AWS technologies, Basis helped them achieve better scalability, improved performance, and a more cost-effective infrastructure.
