Modernizing California Cryobank’s Legacy Application

Problem / NEED

CooperSurgical needed to modernize its legacy application for California Cryobank with a scalable, reliable, and efficient infrastructure, while maintaining compliance with HIPAA and GDPR. The company also wanted to reduce costs and optimize development workflows for a more agile and efficient software development lifecycle.

To meet CooperSurgical’s goals, Basis designed and implemented a comprehensive cloud transformation strategy that incorporated Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automated deployment pipelines, and a microservices-based architecture to enhance scalability and maintainability.

Solution

The Basis team modernized California Crybonaks’ cloud-native infrastructure by focusing on automation, scalability, and security,while ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

Using Terraform, we streamlined infrastructure provisioning and management by integrating GitHub Actions to automate deployments. AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, and CodeDeploy allowed us to establish a CI/CD pipeline for a more efficient software release process. We also used Elastic Beanstalk to manage application deployment and scaling.

We also moved Bankful’s infrastructure from standalone EC2 instances to ECS Fargate, removing the need to manually manage servers. Additionally, we migrated their hosting from Cloudflare to AWS Route 53, ensuring seamless integration with their AWS environment while reducing costs.

We also helped the Cryobank team adopt a microservice architecture to improve flexibility and performance. AWS Lambda and API Gateway made it easy for the team to handle registration, logging, billing, authorization, and search functionality.

We used Amazon RDS to securely store personally identifiable information (PII), while AWS Secrets Manager and Parameter Store ensured the safe storage of configuration keys and sensitive credentials. Amazon Cognito was also implemented for secure and scalable user authentication and management.

We also set up OpenSearch to optimize search capabilities to improve query performance and search functionality. Real-time monitoring, logging, and observability were enhanced through Amazon CloudWatch. To ensure reliability and scalability, Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR) provided containerized stability, while Application Load Balancer (ALB) and Auto Scaling Groups (ASG) helped maintain high availability and fault tolerance.

RESULTS

The modernization of California Cryobank’s infrastructure resulted in significant benefits. By implementing automated deployments and cloud-native infrastructure management, operational overhead greatly reduced, and manual maintenance was minimized.

Application performance and scalability were enhanced through a microservices-based architecture, featuring dynamic resource allocation, auto-scaling, and advanced load balancing. What previously took months of planning and provisioning to scale now happens in minutes.

With secure data storage, robust authentication, encrypted secrets management, and integrated logging and monitoring, CooperSurgical achieved full compliance with HIPAA and GDPR. These controls ensured end-to-end auditability and traceability, supporting both security and regulatory standards.

The Basis team also played a key role in optimizing AWS costs, helping CooperSurgical manage monthly cloud spend of approximately $50,000–$60,000 while maintaining performance and scalability.

With Basis’ support, CooperSurgical successfully transitioned California Cryobank to a secure, scalable, and future-ready cloud infrastructure—laying the foundation for sustained growth, cost efficiency, and operational agility.
